The Foundation of the Chakra System: the Sacred Temple of the Body.
The root chakra is the lowest chakra and as such is the foundation of all the other chakras. The foundation contains the temple's energy, gives us ground, a home, and an anchor point to our existence. The root chakra is considered the source of our life energy. The strength for living and the feeling of trust and security are the central themes of this chakra. The root chakra connects us to the physical world.
The root chakra is the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empower our Being
The earth element in the root energy is the slowest vibration - it is a condensed state of matter. The earth oriented downward energy that is gravity dominates this chakra, which is expressed in our bones, teeth and large intestines (carrying solid matter). The energy of the root chakra is felt in the lower limbs which connect us to the earth. In the legs, the sciatic nerve (longest peripheral nerve in the body) is the root of our nervous system.
The solid matter of our roots directs our consensus reality, that "matter is constant", and represents how we interface with the physical realm: our body, home, finance, work and environment. It is our physical identity and our ability to identify with our needs. Its purpose is self-preservation, the survival of the vehicle in which we journey, the body. Our bodies express the journey of our lives!

The Earthly element gives us stability and solid ground upon which we construct our lives
Building an existence, finding material security and securing the survival of our species by founding a family, belong to the sphere of the root energy. An important aspect of your ability to maintain your survival at a comfortable level has to do with your ability to have things, to keep and to attract materiality into your life. Ask yourself:
"Who is responsible for your survival?'
"How do you feel about standing on your own two feet?"
"What is your relationship towards material belongings and your beliefs around your right to have?"
Think of the financial abundance you may have. However large or small, think of it as a gift from the earth. Ask yourself:
"How does it come to you?"
"What do you use it for?"

Physical Identity
Our association with this chakra is the physical identity, and our task is learning to accept our bodies. To validate the body is to identify with it. It is through the first chakra that we gain our physical identity, which gives us solidity as human beings. The language of the root chakra is form.
Your Body is your Expression of your Physical Form
An exercise of observation: Pay attention to your posture, how you stand. Is your pelvis tipped forward or held back, are your knees locked or flexible. Does your belly hang forward or your chest collapse?
Your body's expressions are all indications of holding patterns - conscious or unconscious. Conscious holding patterns are how we stand when we are being watched, for example, we may hold in our bellies. Unconscious holding patterns are the postures we take without thinking, for example, slumping or standing on one leg.
What can you learn about your holding patterns as you observe your posture?

Our Bodies Express our Lives.
Begin a dialog with your body. In a relaxed environment, ask your body how it feels, and listen for its answer. For each body part complete the following sentences with an emotional experience. This exercise will give you a view of how your body is expressing your experience of life.
I am my feet and I feel ...
I am my knees and I feel ...
I am my shoulders and I feel ...
I am my head and I feel ...
Give your body a chance to speak and write down your answers, then read back your answers omitting the body part names. For example, "(I am my shoulders, and) I feel the weight of the world".

Nourish and Strengthen your Roots
Eat proteins and root vegetables to strengthen your roots. Eat foods that are "living". To bring more earth energy into your life increase your contact with nature and pay attention to your body - strengthen it, nurture it, love it!
Since nourishment comes in many forms - foods, friends, intellectual or creative stimulation - this issue may translate to other areas in life. Ask yourself:
"In what ways do I nourish my life energy?"

Reclaiming the Sacred Temple of our Bodies, our right to be here, our right to have what we need to survive can be a joyous reunion with the ground of our own being, and a solid beginning to the journey through the chakras
The expression of the Root Chakra is Life Energy, Strength and the Will to Life.
